I write because I can't NOT write. I've been writing since I was nine years old -- ever since I read a book that didn't have a sequel and I couldn't stand not knowing what happened to the main character. After losing a week of sleep, I finally decided to write the sequel. It was so much fun that I've never stopped.

At any rate, several years ago I was chosen to play a murdered slaveowner in the Discovery Channel's documentary of the 1733 Slave Revolt on the Caribbean Island of St. John. After the show aired, I researched it on my own. My previous book (The Jumbee) touched on West Indian voodoo, so this was a natural progression for me.
