Katharina Gerlach I wake up, and the teacher bends over me, saying, "Time's up. I need your paper now."
Katharina Gerlach Oh, that's hard to decide but I'd love to see dragons and unicorns (not the rainbow-farting kind).
Katharina Gerlach This summer I won't be able to reads since I joined a writing challenge.
Katharina Gerlach Sorry for the delay in answering. I was at the Leipzig Book Fair.

The answer is quite simple. I've got a "spare" family in Scotland which I've been visiting for three weeks every year for 16 years. Then, I spent a full year with them. I love the country, the culture, and the many strange creatures in their folk lore. So I tried to put as many as I could into this book. Naturally, I've learned a lot about writing in the years since I wrote "Scotland's Guardians", but I still think it is an entertaining read for those who like the Highlands and Lowlands.
Katharina Gerlach I watched my youngest play with a folding rule (also called carpenter's rule, it's a foldable yardstick very common over here in Germany but not so well known in some other countries) and thought "What if it opens a portal in time..."
Katharina Gerlach Everything and nothing. I just sit down and write. All the events in my every day life mix with the things my imagination comes up with.
Katharina Gerlach I'm working on two series. One is a series of fairy tale retellings, the other a middle grade time travel series.
Katharina Gerlach read as much as you can in as many genres as you can (even genres uncomfortable for you) to get a feel for styles and characters. read some non-fiction too. Maybe do a course on creative writing but that's not obligatory.

When you've done enough reading, sit down and write. Write something every day even if it's just for a few minutes.

Remember that good stories evolve during revision, but you cannot revise an empty page.

So, write.

Daily!
Katharina Gerlach I don't get writers block. I'm too busy writing. If one program jams, I'll simply turn to the next one until my subconscious has figured out what went wrong with the first project.
