The two basics are: Read a lot, and write a lot. There are so many paths to take after that--classes and workshops can be a good place to start.
I've always liked short stories for their compactness, for their power. Writing short stories teaches you how to begin a story and develop a plot--there is no room to waste; you have to dive right into it and unfurl the conflict right away.

Hi:
Sorry, I am not the Jennifer Hubbard who writes for the Magnificat. I occasionally get questions or email meant for her but don't know how to reach her.
Best wishes.

I had long wanted to write about suicide and depression from the aspect of recovery, of stepping back from the brink, of healing, but I didn't have the right characters or situation. I was attempting to write a verse novel and started with a scene of a boy standing under a waterfall. I didn't know who he was or why he was there, but then it occurred to me he might be the one recovering from a suicide attempt, and the story unfolded from there.

I have no formal sequel underway, although I have thoughts about what might happen to the characters next. I also like to know what readers think happens next.

Hi, Nia! Thanks; I'm glad you liked The Secret Year.
I would love for it to be made into a movie. I'm not a filmmaker myself, so that depends on whether a producer would be interested. I'm open to that.

I had always intended to write something about bullying, after some experiences I had growing up. Later in life, when I discovered hiking, I also wanted to include outdoor scenes--especially on mountains--in a book. The ideas came together in Until It Hurts to Stop.
