I'd recommend joining a local writing group and participate in a critique or craft group if the group has one. In California, one such group is the California Writers Club, and there are others. Also, your local college may offer classes for writers, and you might take one. Meetup.com has groups for new writers, too. Sign up to find groups in your area.

The best thing about being a writer is you can do it when you want, so you have plenty of freedom. Also, you can write on a variety of topics, which keeps things interesting.

I don't experience writer's block myself, but for those who do, my suggestions are these: just pick out a time when you will be writing and sit in front of your computer or use a notebook. Then, during this time, start writing down whatever comes to mind. Don't try to edit or analyze it. Just write. Let your creative or intuitive mind lead the way. Later you can come back and analyze. Not sure what to write about -- just look around you and write down what comes to mind. Or think about something you experienced and in the news and write about that. Another approach is to come to that time with an outline of topics to write about and start writing about one of them. And to come up with your outline, just use the same process. Just write down whatever comes to mind and make your list. This is the process I used to write this just now.

I organized a group of three sales reps to go to the American Film Market for me, since I don't like going to these big marketing events and didn't have the time to take away from writing for clients. And then after I went through all the steps to do this successfully, I realized this could make a good book, since other books on working with a sales teams are directed towards managers and owners of large sales forces.

I'm writing some kids books -- adapting Coyote stories from Native Americans into books, as well as writing a book on creating one's first sales team, based on my experiencing in organizing one for the American Film Market to pitch film projects.

I tend to be inspired to write about what I'm experiencing at the time, and if I encounter difficulties or problems, I tend to turn those into blogs, articles, books, or scripts.
