Brenda Sutton Rose The southern landscape and the people of the South influence me. The eccentric people, the common people, the privileged people, the prejudiced people, the religious people, the scarred and damaged people--I find inspiration in people and place. Stories grow out of the southern soil. Stories grow out of the southern hearts. Inspiration abounds in this place.
Brenda Sutton Rose For someone like me, someone who often stumbles over her own words in social situations, writing is a way to express myself. Through writing, I create images, conversations, places, and entire worlds, and I do it with no fear. In "Dogwood Blues," my debut novel, I express my joy of writing through one of my characters, Kevin Kilmer. He tells his students that he writes books with words. Numerous words. Words that stomp and stare and crush and collapse and boogie and bang and scream and laugh and manipulate.

I love writing.
Brenda Sutton Rose I'm not often hit with writer's block, but when I am, I move on to something different. If I'm working on a novel, I take a break and write poetry. If I am hollow inside, and can't even write poetry, I know it's time to live. Take a few days away from the computer and enjoy the countryside. Rent a cabin in the hills and drink wine, eat cheese and olives, and sit on the back porch listening to the night sounds. These things refill my thirsty soul. It is a cure for writer's block.
