When I was walking through Europe and the Sahara, I became fascinated by the idea of writing a series based around the turbulent years preceding the Moorish conquest of northern Africa and Spain. Then, years later, after trying to find my way into the story I wanted to tell, I visited the Cuevas de Pileta near Ronda. The cave painting of a horse leaped off the rock. Two days later I had discovered the extraordinary history of horse worship in the area, and learned about Theudemir of Aurariola. That was the beginning.
