I was writing the first novel as a short story. In that short story I knew I'd need a clearly-defined magic system that came with a cost anyone could pay, rich or poor, old or young, smart or not-so-smart. Since anyone can use magic in my books, I decided magic can use them right back, and that the cost of using magic is pain.
As for the Soul Complements, that stemmed out of the idea that every rule can be broken. Soul Complements can use magic together, and make magic break its own rules. They are rare and more powerful than any other magic user. Of course, there's a cost for being Soul Complements too. ;)
