Great question! I'd say my trust in the reader, specifically the reduction of character "thoughts" in the book. I believe I was at times too hand-holding when writing my first book, and used too much inner dialogue as a sort of crutch. In Book Two that's still there, but is used more sparingly and more meaningfully, I think. Also, Book Two is far different from the first one. The first I viewed as a sort of "internal" epic, with characters undergoing fundamental, personal changes through besting inner challenges rather than outer ones. Book Two has all hell breaking loose.
