I moved from the east coast, from an area where everything was flat and there were no mountains, to southern California, and I love hiking in the nearby mountains as much as I can. Many times earlier in the day or later at night while I’d be hiking on a ridge trail, clouds would roll in, and I wouldn’t be able to see anything at lower elevations. Literally nothing at all. I started to imagine what it would be like if it was always like that, and the world below the clouds was a huge mystery to me. If no one had been down there for hundreds of years. I loved the idea of a place so close being so dangerous and scary.

Get used to rejection, and negative feedback, and expect it, and decide that your story is worth telling anyway. Don't write for people to tell you how wonderful it is. Write because you have stories that need to be told, characters that need to exist, and worlds that must be born. And stop aspiring – just sit down and write, and become a writer.

Getting to know and explore your world and meet your characters. The rush of finding new story pieces. Being able to be the first person to inhabit this fictional space that others will eventually enjoy.
