I write lists of things that I (or my character have done). I don't worry about trying to make it sound good. I simply focus on putting words on the paper.
She went to the house. She opened the door. She walked inside.
Eventually, something will trigger my imagination.

I have the privilege of sharing my heart with people all over the world. It creates connections I would otherwise never even dreamed of.

Surround yourself with writers and write. Read.
You can't be aspiring to be a writer if you're not writing. Write anything. Write the same sentence over and over. Write a journal entry. Write a blog post. By writing something you will find your mind begin to shift into "writer" mode. It is like anything. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert.
That said, writing can be incredibly difficult. It can make you feel very vulnerable and, at times, the words just won't come out the way you want them to. Other writers understand. We've all been there. I have never experienced a more supportive community than the writing world. I have never met a writer who wasn't interested in the stories other people were telling. Often, an objective friend can help you through those hard times. They cheer your successes, too, which is always lovely!
Every writer needs to read. Study the stories told by the masters - the ones you love as well as the ones you dislike. Figure out what makes them work (or not).

I watch the world around me. Writing is a release. There are so many questions and observations constantly buzzing around in my brain that setting them on paper is very freeing to me.

For as long as I can remember, I've been bothered by the "black and white" version of life and the afterlife that was taught to me in church. When I read the Bible, I saw hints and glimpses at a universe infinitely more complex than we commonly accept. In time, those thoughts grew into a story. What if a woman thought she was schizophrenic, but the truth was that she was simply experiencing those parts of life the rest of us can't (won't?) see.
