All things thriller - just finished "The Vanishing Year" by Kate Moretti. I met her agent, Mark Gottlieb, at a writer's conference earlier this year which prompted me to want to read her novel.

My first book, Free of Malice, is actually based on an event in my own life. Writing it was a "calling" and I'm so glad that I took the journey to do it. My next book, based on encouragement from readers to keep writing, is 100% fiction and dedicated to the fans of Free of Malice.
PS - I just chose the title - more on that soon! :-)

Ilsa Lund played by Ingrid Bergman and Rick Blaine played by Humphrey Bogart in the movie Casablanca - both made sacrifices for their love.

HI Lisa - we officially launched end of March. It's on Amazon (paperback and Kindle) and B&N. Thanks!

Sue, I'm sorry Netgalley isn't cooperating. We had some formatting issues so uploaded a 2nd version - that might be the issue. I've sent a Kindle copy to you via Amazon. Please let me know if that doesn't work, and thanks for agreeing to be an Advance Reader. Liz

Tyler - Thanks for asking! I think you'll really like reading about the places in Atlanta in addition to the suspense. The paperback and Kindle version are on Amazon. We are in the process of making available for Nook and B&N as we gear up for full launch. If you happen to use NetGalley, it is also there until end of March. Thanks again!

I told a friend of mine the other day that of all my accomplishments, birthing this book was by far the one that required the most tenacity (and mind you I learned to speak French and can fly a plane!). Hats off to anyone who has made it over the threshold of writing and publishing a book. It's a tremendous accomplishment.

For this book, I had a lot of different topics to cover - recovering from an attack, EMDR therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, gun ownership, criminal defense system and race so there was always something that interested and inspired me.
One of the best compliments I received was that my book was educational while entertaining. I wrote it to be a fun beach read…but always pictured the characters in a movie!

I actually outlined the book over the 6 month period in which the book takes place, using a huge wall calendar. Because I had the outline, I didn't write in order. If I felt like writing about therapy one day, I would, and if I felt like doing a legal chapter, I could. I also didn't put a lot of pressure on myself if I didn't feel like writing - the urge would always come back after a few days.

I postponed writing this book for many years to pursue other opportunities—I moved to Paris, got my MBA from Northwestern and got my pilot's license. But, this book kept nagging me to write it so I finally relented. I would tell other authors, if you have the calling, listen to it.

We are preparing for the launch - February 2016!
I'm finding writing was 20% of the effort, marketing is 80%! :-)

Like the main character, I was attacked by a stranger in my home in the middle of the night. In order to heal, I started to write about how I was feeling and what had changed in my life. At the time, I didn't know about EMDR therapy to heal from trauma, so used writing as a catharsis. Also like the main character, all I had for self-defense was a can of Mace. After the attack, I said to my brother-in-law, if I had owned a gun, I would have shot the guy as he left. My brother-in-law informed me that I was fortunate that I didn't - as the shooting might not have been a clear case of self-defense. That idea sparked my interest in learning about the criminal justice system and inspired me to write the hypothetical case portrayed in the book. The ending, which I won't spoil, was prompted by a question from my mother. Once you've finished the book, you can write to me at liz@lizlazarus.com and I'll tell you more about that.
