I'd been writing about books and reading for several years and had begun to see patterns emerging - what I wanted out of a reading experience, types of books I was repeatedly drawn to, the problem of the exploding TBR pile. These patterns inspired the shape of my book. It was also inspired by my love of books about books.

I write about books, so I would have to say reading is what inspires me to write. Reading has always felt like a conversation between me and the author. This has been so since I first learned to read. Writing about books is taking the conversation going on in my imagination and putting it on the page.

Feeling blocked, for me, usually means I'm trying to move too fast and haven't given myself time to formulate what I'm trying to say and to find the write words. So when I get this feeling, I slow myself down by pulling out a notebook and writing by hand. I might try making a list of the ideas I'm trying to work out or the words that are floating around in my head or by answering the question, "What's this really about for me?"
