For the most part, I find inspiration in being a woman of color and mental illness and trauma survivor. Music also inspires me.

Inception for me was going back in time. To see where the chaos began. Struggling with mental illness, low self-esteem, feeling lost, and trauma shaped the way I loved and how I failed to love myself.
Longing was inspired by my need to turn lust into love. Being in a constant state of longing for anything that resembled it. It was also about taking my body back. I assert my sexual agency as an act of resistance. After being traumatized repeatedly, I felt that my body and any notion of pleasure wasn’t mine to embrace and experience. I wanted to take my power back.

I push through it most times. I focus on an event, summon all the feelings, and put it on paper. I write crap until I find a golden nugget.

Don't let anyone stifle your voice. When I start writing my book about 8 years ago, one of my muses insulted my work. It broke me. I didn't write for years. I nearly threw my manuscript away. It was one of the most depressing years of my life. Don't be afraid to be who you are.

Honestly, writing this book took a lot out of me. Words are always dancing in my head so I write them down as I go. But for now I don't have a specific project in mind. Ask again in 6 months.

I've always had a love for words since a child. I think it all started when I came across letters my mother wrote to God tucked in her bible. Her letters were uplifting and full of wonder; others broke my heart. Her faith quivered but I could tell that it was still there. I wanted to elicit emotions with pen and paper. That's when I started writing around 11 or so.

Initially it was about a failed relationship with someone I was desperately in love with. Years later I reworked my manuscript. I reflected on experiences that happened throughout my life to reveal the chaos in my life and how it shaped the the way I hurt and loved. I wanted the chaos to come into order.

The best thing for me is encountering people who can relate. It makes me feel like I'm not alone.
