I’d have to go the friendship route with this question, as opposed to romance, and choose ten-year-old Cadi and her friend Lilybet. Although Cadi never knew if her friend was real or not (“whether Lilybet was an angel or no ain’t for me to say”), Lilybet was always there when Cadi needed her the most.
The best books are those in which one remembers the characters long after being read. I’ll never forget Cadi and Lilybet. And for this reason, The Last Sin Eater (by Francine Rivers) is one of my all-time favorites.
