They finally figured out that Steve wasn't real, but I've always wondered--what would it be like to find out, as a teenager, that you had a sibling you never knew about?

All kinds of ways. Usually by reading great writing. Sometimes by daydreaming, or actual dreaming. Snippets of overheard conversation. People-watching. I always carry a notebook for jotting down ideas. You never know when a word or image might come in handy later.

Read! Read everything. Even read books you don't like, and figure out why you don't like them, and how you'd write them differently. And then write a book you'd want to read.

If I'm in first-draft mode, I read what I wrote the previous day, and that usually gets me started on fiddling and revising and, eventually, writing again. If I've been stuck for a while, I reread something I've written that I'm proud of, which reminds me that I have written stuff I like in the past, and the part of my brain that made it is still there.
