Dana Schwartz Don't forget that it's supposed to be fun! If it's not fun for you to write, it won't be fun for people to read. BUT, on the other hand, turning a hobby into a job makes it, well, a JOB. Writing as a job can be a slog. It means you have to do it even when you don't feel like it. You have to come at it with discipline (she said, giving advice that she doesn't always take herself.) This is a long-winded answer that says very little. I guess the truth is, there is no one-sized-fits-all advice about making a career out of the creative. Wait, I came up with some: make a LOT of art. Throw lots of pasta at the wall. Get used to rejection. And keep at it!
Dana Schwartz I still don't feel like a writer most of the time! But, I think it was when I first got published in a magazine that I read when I was younger—seeing my name in print was a real MOMENT.
