I went from solely reading memoirs to solely reading business books because I kept feeling like I didn't learn enough from memoirs but then there wouldn't be enough story for me in a business book. So I decided to try to combine the two—to create something I'm calling a bizoir--10 chapters of memoir with 4 chapters of how you can take your own messy life and make it into a memoir, and business.

Read. Cultivate your voice. Write. Rewrite. Don't take too many writing classes. Just keep writing. Be careful who you give your work to; there are a lot of people who don't know a lot. Keep reading. Keep writing.

I don't believe in writer's block. Does the bricklayer not lay bricks because he or she doesn't feel like it's going well enough? If you're a writer, you write when it feels good and when it doesn't. Do enough of the latter and it will start to feel good again.
