Mutt is one of my favorite recurring characters in your Kate Shugak series, every book of which I have read and re-read multiple times (well, only one re-read for No Fixed Line so far...). What canines, real-life and/or literary, inspired Kate’s wonderful sidekick?
Dana Stabenow Okay, this is embarrassing to relate--I've never owned a dog, although I've known a bunch of them. All I can tell you is that Mutt bounced out into the middle of the first chapter of the first Kate Shugak novel and has taken over every scene she's been in ever since.

Hello! Like many people, I LOVE your Kate Shugak series. I was just curious if there are any plans in the works for book 23? Given the way book 22 ended, I felt like it could go either way, as it was with book 21.
Dana Stabenow Thank you so much, Ashlyn! I'll write another Kate Shugak novel when the right plot for it comes along. It hasn't yet, probably partly because I'm loving writing the Eye of Isis novels at the moment. But I'm always looking, so stay tuned.

Hi Dana, Have you read the New Yorker (Aug 24, 2020)? Very good article on the "uncertain fate of the whale" and how it begins in Alaska. I am now reading a Deeper Sleep. Very much enjoy your books especially as Kate seems to take on a new persona.

My husband has spent the last two months reading the Kate canon, with no other books inbetween. He has noticed the increase in the length of the books, and he also wants to know if you acquired a Word of the Day calendar along the way since he's been looking up words in the latter books of the series? He is on #20, and I've kept my mouth shut with "no spoilers" for two months now! I've been reading Kate since '03.
Dana Stabenow [laughing] No, tell him no word of the day calendar, just a wordy writer. Delighted he (and you) are enjoying the series. The books got longer partly because I stopped having to write two a year, but I notice a book is as long as it takes to tell the story it's telling. Though Not Dead is the longest one because the third plot line, jim's, just showed up in the middle of writing the book and demanded to be included. When the muse knocks you have to get up and answer the door.

I wanted to know if you was planning anymore Kate books? I just saw you are planning book 22! Thank you so much for continuing the series. I laugh, cry, get mad, happy and just lose myself in your books. Thank you so much!! You are my favorite author. I hesitated reading book 21 because it was the last one. It was great! I am starting the Liam series now.
Dana Stabenow Thanks, Levi! I'm elbowing into Kate22 even as we speak. It picks up almost immediately after Kate21 leaves off. Don't have a publication date or even a title yet.

Not a question but comment, just finished Silk and Song. LOVED IT! However, seems chapters 12, 13, and 14 are incorrectly labeled 1324, shouldn’t it be 1323. Look forward to your next book.?

Dana Stabenow Hi Barbara! The first Eye of Isis novel goes in next Wednesday and after that I begin work on the 22nd Kate Shugak novel. The dates of publication for the Liam Campbell novels--

You are asking about the cover for "Death of an Eye" to which I responded on facebook. The cover says an Eye of Isis Mystery which indicates to me that there are other books in this series. How many series do you have? Your Kate books are excellent in not only the descriptions of Alaska but especially of Mutt. They are so vivid I tend to read them out loud to my husband (who does not read fiction). We both love Mutt

I've binged all of the Kate Shugak books since I found them the first of the year. I am nearly ready to start 21, reading the reviews for 20 are worrisome as we are standing on the bank examining the scene of Tyler's death at the fish wheel, I have to ask 22? Do I skip right to 21 and circle back to 20? I am worried, have a really reached the end of Kate Shugak?
Dana Stabenow Hi, Melissa! Right now I'm working on The Eye of Isis, a mystery set in Alexandria in the time of Cleopatra, featuring Cleopatra's "fixer."
When that's done, I'll move on to the 22nd Kate Shugak novel. I don't yet have a pub date, but most likely sometime next year. Thanks for the 21st Kate Shugak novel. Are you working on the next? I was thinking K&J Investigations as a way for Kate and Jim to work together doing what they do best. Will Jim's plane have a jump seat for Mutt?
Dana Stabenow Right now I'm writing The Eye of Isis, about Cleopatra's fixer set in Alexandria during Cleopatra's life. Next I'll write the 22nd Kate Shugak novel. And Mutt hasn't needed a jump seat so far. Thanks, Deborah!
