Roz Watkins I'm just finalising book 2 in the DI Meg Dalton Series. A man is murdered, and it seems to have something to do with his ten-year-old daughter's heart transplant. The girl claims to remember her heart donor's death. I'm also working on book 3, in which a woman vanishes from an abattoir (and rather worryingly the pigs didn't want their breakfast that morning!)
Roz Watkins What worked for me was reading a ton of writing-craft books. I hadn't written fiction since school, and hadn't done an English degree (or anything relating to English at all!) so I had a huge amount to learn. Also getting feedback on your writing is really important (I used Scribophile). And finally my writer friends have been amazing! So I'd recommend going to writing events and hanging around at the bar!
Roz Watkins You can sit on your own and plan murders - and you can't say that for many jobs. But I also enjoy getting out and meeting readers and other writers. Crime writers seem to know how to party!
Roz Watkins I find writing the first draft really hard! I can get obsessed with word-count, and feel I haven't achieved anything if I've written no words in a day. But actually I've realised that thinking is just as important as writing. So if I feel blocked, I'll maybe walk the dog or go and shovel a bit of horse manure. It works for me :) If I get blocked after the first-draft stage, I read writing-craft books - they always give me ideas for how to move forward.
