My best inspiration is to start writing. If I waited for inspiration to write, I would never finish a manuscript.

I used to feel guilty about the time I spent reading, and the money I spent on books, but now I'm like, oh, it's for work. Isn't that great? I get to read and write for a living.

I think the two most important things a writer aspiring to be traditionally published needs to do are:
1. Read a lot of recently released books, especially in your genre, so you know what the market is looking for.
2. Learn about the business of writing by following agent and editor blogs as well as attending writers conferences, if possible, and getting a critique from someone in the industry.
If you start out doing these two things, you will be way ahead!

Read, read, read. There is nothing more inspiring than a good book! I also switch it up. If I'm not going anywhere with one project, I'll move to another.

A number of years ago, the rail line behind our house closed. I had enjoyed listening to the trains rumbling by in the distance, then suddenly the comforting sound was gone. I began to imagine a post-apocalyptic world where huge swaths of the country were abandoned. My main character from ALL THINGS NOW LIVING, Amy, appeared in this landscape, scavenging with her father. From there I developed the back story of how the world ended up so empty, and the conflict that emerged over the groups of people who had survived.
