George Neeb My advice would be to take a chance and publish your writing. I never thought my work would be good enough to publish. This year, I got up the courage to publish my first book and the response has been nothing but supportive and positive. It is hard work but rewarding.
George Neeb As a teacher, I loved having my students perform plays. I never could find suitable plays, so I started writing class plays. These ideas I am slowly working into picture books, because I love illustrating my own books.
George Neeb The best part about being a writer is that you get to create interesting characters and situations and then let your readers enjoy your creativity.
George Neeb I only write as a hobby, so if I don't have an idea, I don't worry about writing. I have published one book and have two more ready to publish, so I am not sure about books after that. Maybe I will have writers block then and if so, I will find other interests to pursue until I have a new idea.
George Neeb Before "Pharaoh's Arrow" was a picture book, I had written a similar story as a play for my class to perform. We were studying Ancient Egypt and I wanted my class to perform a play to get them excited about the topic. I couldn't find a play, so I wrote one. The play dealt with a regular Egyptian family coming face to face with Almighty Pharaoh. The class did a great job with the play but then I moved to a younger grade and filed the play away for about 20 years! Recently, our curriculum changed to include Egypt again. I dug out the play and used the idea to write this picture book. I love Egyptian style art, so I did the illustrations in that style and had a lot of fun creating the book.
George Neeb My next book is about a girl who wants to be popular because she has been teased all her life about her weight. She thinks popularity will solve her problems. I am doing the illustrations with dyed paper.
