Years ago, my husband bought two Gouldian finches. We had them for only one week when we came home and discovered little Joey lying dead on the cage floor. The other little which we named Kiki was trembling on her perch. As we only had them for a short time, we received a refund. I feel bad that we never learnt whether Kiki survived or what really happened to Joey.

I step away from the laptop and do something unrelated to writing. Often it's going for a walk or kayaking. Being outside in nature helps to ease the frustration, and I often find myself able to work through the block. What I won't do is try and force myself to write. If I do I'm no longer enjoying the process.

Being able to create a work that has the potential to have a positive impact on the reader, whether it is to entertain them or whether it's to get them to think. Ultimately I aim for both.

If you honestly love writing my advice would be to don't give up. Years ago I put getting published on my bucket list. My intention was to get a small article published. When I kept getting rejected, I decided to write a novel. And after many drafts and self-edits, Beyond Circumstances was created. To me writing is fun, but it does take a lot of work to get it to the point where you're happy with it.

Beyond Circumstances is book one of the Out of the Darkness series. Book two, Escaping Circumstances, is scheduled for release in December 2018. I've written a third in the series, which I'm currently doing a few more self-edits before I send them to my publisher. There's a fourth and final one I'm contemplating, for which I drafted the first chapter. I also recently completed a novel for a new series. This one is set in a coastal town in Oregon.

I've been writing in some capacity for most of my adult life. I've always loved words and communicating on paper. It's far easier for me to write than to speak. As far as what gets me inspired to write, I guess it's having a story that I believe needs to be told. To me Beyond Circumstances had a story I wanted others to know. Although it's fiction, there are many aspects inspired by real life situations.

The idea came to me while listening to the news one day. I didn't like what was happening, and it got me thinking about how many times we make assumptions about people. In regards to the PTSD theme, it's an issue close to my heart.
