Mr and Mrs Micawber in David Copperfield. He was always optimistic believing that "something will turn up", while bumbling his way through every financial crisis. Despite her annoyance with his inability to hold down a job, she always supported him in a good natured way with her much quoted, "Never will leave Mr Micawber".

I was taken on a tour around the New York Historical Society Museum by an excellent guide. The British artefacts he showed me from the American War of Independence, led me to investigate the part played in this war by my local regiment, The Wiltshire Regiment. I discovered a woeful tale of a military disaster. The story had to told! Thus after following in the footsteps of the regiment in Canada and America, I wrote the Wessex Turncoat.

I am trying to write a Viking story for children aged 9 -13. I am currently trying out parts of the book in schools. There is huge satisfaction in seeing children engrossed in reading.

Staring at a computer screen does not help! I put on my boots and jacket and take a long country walk. There is nothing like fresh air for clearing the brain. I think it was Dickens who said of the air on the Isle of Wight, "It is worth six pence a pint."
