One morning this cryptic sentence popped into my mind: When you've been married to a polecat, it takes a while to get rid of the stench. I was mystified by what it meant but quickly wrote down the words. I knew that polecat is another term for skunk. From that sentence I created Carly Richards, a widow who'd been in a bad marriage and wasn't interested in allowing another man into her life.
