Colleen Winter This would be so hard to choose. My first thought is that I'd love to go to Anne McCaffrey's Pern and ride a dragon and fight threads. Because well who wouldn't? Of course I'd love to go to Tolkien's Middle-earth and visit the shire and Rivendell. And it would require that I be exceptionally brave but trying out the multiple universes of Dark Matter by Blake Crouch would be something everyone should try once in their lifetime. Isn't it?
Colleen Winter I attended Thrillerfest earlier this summer so many of the books I'm reading are from fellow authors who attended the conference including November Road by Lou Verney, and The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. Plus I'm attending CanCon in October so am reading the books of the keynote speakers including All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders and The Bone Mother by David Demchuk. I also read Where the Crawdads Sing because Wow! and I also read American Gods by Neil Gaiman since it was the only book of his I had not read yet. So lots of variety but I love to read across a wide range of genres.
Colleen Winter I get inspired to write by exposing myself to all different kinds of art. Whether it's paintings, novels, sculptures, films, or nature. Seeing other artists and creators putting themselves out there and trying to capture the wonder of the world, gives me courage to take the same risks and try to create something worth sharing. Plus, if I don't write on a regular basis, I start to get a little antsy.
Colleen Winter The best advice I can give for aspiring writers is to keep writing. It sounds like a cliche but there's a reason for that. Even when it's going badly, or you feel as if no one cares about your book but you, you have to keep going. Have bad days, have good days, read, go to conferences, meet other writers, take workshops. You have to embrace the entire process and above all else Just. Keep. Writing. Because in the end it has to be about the love of writing. Without that, it doesn't make sense.
Colleen Winter For me, writer's block only happens when I have taken a wrong turn. Whenever I find I can't move forward, I backtrack to find the place where I went off course. Once I've found the thread of the story again, any blockages fall away.
Colleen Winter I'm currently working on the second book of The Gatherer series (no title yet :)). I'm nearing the end and I'm thrilled at how the story has unfolded. I am severely biased on this but this book feels even better than the first instalment. I can't wait to share it with everyone.
Colleen Winter This book started with the image of a woman looking south from the Yukon with a deep sense of isolation and regret. What that regret was and how she was going to remedy it were what fuelled the storyline and brought me to examine our relationship with energy and what we're willing to sacrifice to feed our energy wants and needs.
