Dan Barry I will notice something in everyday life that intrigues me, or enrages me, or makes me laugh, and I will feel the need to share it. My default method of sharing is to write it down. So, I suppose, the inspiration comes from noticing, from observing, and then reaching for a pen. It's like all these firefly moments, and I want to capture them in a jar.
Dan Barry Good question1 (That's a joke.) I travel the country for The New York Times, often to write a column called "This Land." In planning a trip to Iowa, I saw a small news item that caught my breath: about a $240 million verdict (later reduced) in favor of 32 men with intellectual disability. All working in a turkey-processing plant, all living in an old schoolhouse, all being paid $65 a month, plus room and board, for decades. I spent a year on a long New York Times story that appeared in 2014, but knew I had so much more to tell. So I kept reporting, and I kept writing, until a book emerged.
