"The idea" doesn't really fit. The Reeking Hegs is chock-full of ideas. It twists and turns in many, many directions. I'd say that life and my experience of it were the roots of what you will find in the pages of The Reeking Hegs.

Basically by reading. As a child I was awe-struck by the books I read. I admired them so much it made me want to be a writer too, in the hope that I might be able to inspire others the way I had been.
From there it's really just a case of taking an idea - any small idea can get you started - and turning it into a full-blown story.
