IIt's not a personal-to-me mystery, but I've always been fascinated by the DB Cooper hijacking. For anyone who hasn't heard the story, Cooper hijacked a plane flying between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, in 1971. The FBI paid the ransom. Cooper skydived out of the plane with the money . . . and has never been caught. Some of the money was found in 1980 on a sandbar in the Columbia River, but no one knows if Cooper survived or who he really was.

One fun thing about this question: I could happily argue every novel is, at least partially, a mystery! But if my next book absolutely had to be in another genre, I'd play around with urban fantasy. Or maybe a romance!
