Heather Dark Hmm. Great question. For me, it's still the mystery and complexity of love and relationships. The mystery of love is universal and we can all relate to it. I do try to explore these themes in my writing.
Heather Dark When I get writer's block, it helps me to step away from my writing for a while, like a month or so. When I do come back to it, I can look at my writing with a fresh set of eyes, 'see' it in a new light and what is missing. For me, obtaining feedback from my local writer's group was inspiring and most helpful, especially when I didn't know what to write next.
Heather Dark I was a full-time working mother of three young children when I started writing The Designer Wife, so I would have to write in the evenings and sometimes early into the morning hours when the house was quiet.
Fortunately, I'm a night owl anyway, so I was inspired to write something every night, even if it was only a single sentence. Occasionally, I would write on weekends.
While I was determined to write this story, I didn't set myself a deadline for the novel. I knew it would be finished when it was finished, and when I was happy with it. It ended up taking five years to write.
Heather Dark This story was partially inspired by my sister Jane's real-life amnesia she suffered after surgery to remove a brain tumour at the age of 37. It was her journey toward recovery and her courage that inspired me to write this novel. What started as a memoir, quickly evolved into a fictional story.

Jane was an acclaimed graphic designer prior to her brain cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgeries. She has a love of fashion and she enjoyed holidays in Atlanta and New York, so it seemed fitting that the protagonist for this story was a fashion designer and I set the story in the U.S. For this reason, I wrote the novel in U.S. English (I'm Australian).

Jane has made a full recovery and I've dedicated The Designer Wife to her.
