Marilyn Freeman I began by thinking of a situation - a young woman recently bereaved and the appearance of a stranger at the graveside. The rather complicated plot grew from there but the master-stroke of the book for me was basing the main action in that amazing city of Paris, conjured up largely from the memories created during a wonderful school holiday when I was 16!
Marilyn Freeman I'm currently working on the first book in a trilogy based on the lives of my own ancestors. The first book is about my fifth great grandfather Joseph Bangham, covering a period of great change in the Severn Gorge between 1715 and 1754.
Marilyn Freeman Relax and enjoy yourself. Once you have your developed your characters, give them their head and they won't let you down. Write because you find it interesting and liberating, not because you want to be famous!
Marilyn Freeman The best thing about writing fiction is that I can be anyone, go anywhere and do anything I choose, whenever I wish. This has been particularly useful during lockdown!
Marilyn Freeman If I get stuck I take a walk along the river Ouse for an hour or so in the fresh air, and this usually does the trick. If that doesn't work, I file the story in a 'thinking about it' file on my computer, then return to it in a week or two, read through it again, and then the blockage usually disappears.
