Benjamin Shaw My big brother. He said one sentence to me and it stuck - I can't tell you what it is, it'll ruin the book!
Benjamin Shaw Watch and listen - to as much as possible. Inspiration isn't actually something anyone else can give you, it's a gift you provide to yourself; and it's easy to talk yourself out of it and do something else instead. If you do that, inspiration will eventually stop dropping by.
Benjamin Shaw Marketing and publishing Operation Hurricane, the first Evan Boyd Adventure.
And filling a pad with ideas for Evan Boyd #2.
Benjamin Shaw Write everything down. Shape it, sharpen it and go easy on yourself when it's rubbish. Then, if you have to, be ready to let it go and move on to something else.
But NEVER throw it out. Keep it in the drawer.
Benjamin Shaw It's different at each stage.
Firstly - creating a world, climbing into it and getting to know the people who inhabit it.
Secondly - inviting other people into that world and seeing their reaction.
Thirdly - working with talented people who can help to shape it.
Fourthly - the buzz of putting it out there for readers to enjoy.
And finally... realising you have to start it all over again!
Benjamin Shaw I don't fight it. I step away from the keyboard, with my pad and just read through the notes I've made. Something in that pad will dislodge the blockage; whether it's a name that's caught me or an idea for an action scene... eventually, something is going to shake loose.
Benjamin Shaw Oh, it would have to be Fleming's Bond... the suits, the food!
Benjamin Shaw I've started the Cherub Series and I can't wait to get on with book two. The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean - I've loved his Tuva series. Jack Carr's Savage Son is on my list along with the Artemis Fowl books. I also would love to see Terry Haye's follow-up to I Am Pilgrim finally arrive in 2021!
