What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
S. Palmer Smith Put in the work. But, when you get burned out, make room for days off. Reward yourself with small things you love when you reach your goals, bit by bit.

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?
S. Palmer Smith Is there a monster in the dryer who eats away one sock each time we put clothes in to dry and can I find that monster and understand his life story?
The mystery of the communication/thought processes that go on in the minds of my guardian angels. I'm convinced there are at least three.

What are you currently working on?
S. Palmer Smith I am currently working on a genre-bending novel about a murder in an upper-class family in the 1980s. It is based in New York City. There are vampires/magic/witches/gargoyles in this novel.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
S. Palmer Smith Coffee, walking, and more coffee.

How do you get inspired to write?
S. Palmer Smith This may sound somewhat common, but I am first and foremost inspired by emotion. I am inspired by anything that makes me feel a certain emotion in a way that knocks me off my feet or creates shock inside the pit of my stomach.
And second, I do get inspired by coffee. The ideal cup of coffee can get me in a mindset that makes me never want to quit what I am focusing on...

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
S. Palmer Smith The ideas that encapsulated my book were really ideas that originated from memories. I used a mix of fiction and non-fiction in my poetry and short stories. I always knew I wanted to write books--I just never knew my first book would consist of poetry until I fell in love with the genre.
