Before I wrote PROFILES IN IGNORANCE, I was wondering how we wound up with a President, Donald J. Trump, who was so deeply ignorant on so many subjects. After extensive research, I found that there has been a steep increase in ignorance among our politicians over the past 50 years. The facts I unearthed were simultaneously hilarious and horrifying.

If I waited to get inspired, I wouldn’t write much at all. I approach it more as a job, and write every day regardless of whether I feel particularly inspired. I have observed, though, that ideas often come to me unbidden when I go for a run. There is probably a physiological explanation for that.

Don’t waste your time and creativity talking about what you’re going to write - just write. A bad first draft is miles better than no draft.

It’s hard to choose a favorite but I love that I get to play with words, work by myself, and dress like crap.

I try to avoid it by writing nearly every day. I think writer’s block is most likely to afflict you if you’re not writing and you have the time to ruminate. So I don’t allow myself that time.
