The Germans finally place them in their version of Alcatraz, and these pilots succeed in staging the greatest breakout of the war. These early pilots were daredevils extraordinaires, and they make for fascinating research.

Richard Rhodes, THE MAKING OF THE ATOMIC BOMB. Typically, I'll be reading some massive tome and come across a small story within (spies on skis on a mission to hit an impenetrable castle--WINTER FORTRESS) that drives me to want to know more. What seems a small story becomes a large stage once you get to know the individuals who lived and experienced it.

Not sure I believe too much in inspiration, as I do becoming so deeply immersed into a story that it swirls around in your head at every hour and begins to fall into a certain order and place. That and coffee, lots of coffee!

As an author of non-fiction narratives, I love diving deep into a new subject every two or three years. Of my books, I've had the joy of exploring New York in the Roaring Twenties (HIGHER), the race to break four-minute mile (PERFECT MILE), the hunt for Nazis in Argentina (HUNTING EICHMANN), and most recently, the operation by saboteurs in Norway to stop Hitler from obtaining the bomb.
