Ruth Dugdall Write your way through it. Saying, `the muse hasn't visited me today` seems too indulgent. Turn up at the blank page and work!
Ruth Dugdall Not having to get up early in the morning to drive to work!
Ruth Dugdall Read! Read all the time, and widely. Books you love and books you hate will teach you about language and plot, about what works and what doesn't. My favourite books (The Handmaid's Tale and The Secret History) I re-read every year.
Ruth Dugdall A novel called Innocence Lane, set in Suffolk and about a shooting that may or may not have been committed by a sleepwalker.
Ruth Dugdall All of my books are inspired by real crimes, and I was a probation officer for many years, so I also draw on my own experience working within the Criminal Justice system.
Ruth Dugdall I was watching a TV programme, years ago, and a young woman was saying that her sister had been attacked but the police were closing the file as they had no leads. She lived in a small town and this young woman was haunted by the idea that her sister's attacker could be next to her in the cinema, serving her in the chip shop...he was somewhere close and people must know but were keeping quite. Both of these facts struck me so powerfully that I created Sam, who resolves to find her sister's attacker. Whatever it costs her.
