Usually, I'll have an idea of something that needs to be written and a nagging feeling that I'm the one who needs to write it. Then, I'll think about whether it's really worth the time I'll have to put into it - which, for a book, means several years. If the answer is yes, I set a deadline for the first draft and start working toward it.

I write at the same time each day for a set amount of time, and have a specific "assignment" that needs to get done each day. On the days things aren't clicking, I force myself to get the words down anyway. It's often easier to revise and figure out what you wanted to say once the words are in front of you.

I began writing "See Me After Class" during my younger sister's first year as a teacher when I saw that she needed the same type of advice and encouragement that I needed during my own first year three years earlier. Many teachers get their best classroom tips and most comforting stories off the record from more experienced teachers. I wanted to collect those tips and stories and offer new teachers the funny, honest, practical guide that was missing from the lineup of books for new teachers.
