Thank you for your kind words about TMS. I'm always writing. If all goes well, I'll have new books available in bookstores and libraries over the next three to five years.

I'm writing a novel that takes place in Omaha, so books about Omaha and Warren Buffett. Also articles on Demoiselle cranes since they play a role, too. The Sellout and Moonglow in terms of new novels. Dante and Voltaire in terms of old works.

The Macbeths. Theater for me, more than literary fiction, brings out the dynamics of couples in a big way and there is no bigger power couple in theater than the Macbeths. Plus good people seldom make for a good story and those two are both joined at the hip and thoroughly awful, a great combo for dynamic story telling.

Haha. Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the book. Hope you like the next one. No math in that one, though.

Sounds like fun. November is wide open right now.

It'll be fun to see a review there. My mom was a loyal subscriber when I was growing up. I think the last time I made it into the Chronicle was the occasion of my wedding 35 years ago. If you could mention I'll be giving a reading at Boswell Books on Sep. 10th, that would be good.

Dombrowski is a mix of former Wisconsin governors Lee Dreyfus and Patrick Lucey with a Milwaukee alderman I remember from when I was a kid.

A mathematician, an Eastern European emigre, came to our house for dinner and after spending much of the dinner staring at my three year old kid, berated me for not teaching her algebra because he was convinced she was a math genius. I thought about what would it be like to be an Eastern European female math genius. The eventual result was The Mathematician's Shiva.

My next novel. I'm in second draft mode. It'll probably take five or six drafts before I get to where I think it's suitable for show.

Read critically and learn from the best by reading from the best. Learn to do this on your own without a formal class. Write down thoughts as you read. You can't be a good writer without being a good reader. Continue to read as you teach yourself how to write.
When you start writing don't wait for inspiration. Write every day for at least two hours. Don't make it into something lofty. Think of it as a regular job. If your writing is lousy at first don't get discouraged. You need to write 100,000 words or so before it's likely you'll find a voice and develop enough craft that you'll write something others will find worth reading.

When you're writing, you kick into the flow, and you lose track of time. That's absolutely the best thing. It's magical, a close second to falling gooey, head over heels in love.

I get inspired by the actual writing. I write and write until I find myself in the flow. Sometimes the flow comes quickly. Sometimes it doesn't come at all that day, but I try not to get discouraged.
