Loretta Ellsworth My advice is to take the time and steps necessary to learn your craft, either on your own or through an institution,, and to read as much as you can. Also, develop a thick skin and don’t give up - this can be a frustrating business.
Loretta Ellsworth My next novel STARS OVER CLEAR LAKE comes out in May. It's a WW II novel set in Iowa, and involves the Surf Ballroom and a POW camp.
Loretta Ellsworth Getting to talk about reading and books, both such a passion of mine. And meeting others who share that passion.
Loretta Ellsworth Reading is one way that helps me when I'm stuck. Allowing other stories and worlds into my head broadens my thinking and encourages me to be brave with my own stories, to let go and see where my story takes me.
Loretta Ellsworth My new novel STARS OVER CLEAR LAKE comes out in 2017 from Thomas Dunne Books. It was inspired by my parents, who met at the Surf Ballroom, and the little-known history of POWs in Iowa. My story is about an Iowa farm girl named Lorraine, whose beloved brother is away at war during WWII. She falls for a German POW sent to work on her family’s farm, against the wishes and beliefs of her mother, her town, and her community. When her German soldier is sent back overseas, she becomes engaged to her high school sweetheart and tries to forget him, but after the end of the war she sees him at the Surf Ballroom working as a saxophone player.
