Amy Sutherland Books are exhausting, like running seven marathons in a row, so I'm resting up by working on short pieces and writing my column Bibliophiles for the Boston Globe's Books section.

Amy Sutherland I don't believe in it. If there is no such thing, then you can't have it. BUT, I admit to scratching out some really rough drafts and when the going gets especially tough I go over my notes, write outlines, anything to keep the train moving along. I also find long walks crucial to being a writer, not to mention a person.
Amy Sutherland The short answer is I don't. Years of working at a newspaper on deadline taught me to just sit down and start writing. Helps if there's a dog in the room, which is a big bonus of writing on my own, though I still miss working in a newsroom.
Amy Sutherland Mostly from volunteering with the more challenging dogs at the Animal Rescue League in Boston. But the true inspiration was Penny Jane, a near feral dog I adopted when I lived in Portland, Me. She taught me everything I know about patience and fearful dogs.
