My recent book Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler began as a spiritual journey for me. What started as a delving into the Seven Deadly Sins morphed into something I never saw coming. I also wanted to write in the first person and from a woman's point of view. I like to think about progressing as a writer, no producing a craft. Kind of like Truman Capote, you know. For instance, because I felt few writer did this, I set myself apart and learned to write "script"--or screenplay.

I get inspired to write because I know I possess a God-given talent.

I'm currently working on The Blue Diamond, a novel taking place in Puerto Rico. A thriller that moves two brothers on a quest to find answers that relate to their ancestors, and why their grandmother left the island during Commonwealth Status in the 1950s. I have used "posterity" as the theme of the novel. The story takes an interesting turn as the brothers arrive in San Juan, only to realize that their mother's family is filthy rich. Until this moment they have been led to believe that their grandmother left because of strife. Also, the brothers possess a map--to their chagrin they find out that the map is authentic ... circa 1500's ... and it also contains the name of Rodriguez and a blue diamond the size of a fist. Their adventure takes them to the Yunque rain forest, where they will encounter a medicine man and caves and statues, remnants of Taino Indian culture.

If there's a book you want to read and it hasn't been written, it's your duty to write it.

Depends on how you look at writer's block. I've accumulated so much material I"ll never get to the bottom of the stack. Are you serious about writing? Since my first novel was published, I have written four more manuscripts that will take years to polish. I think you have to remember that books don't write themselves. If I had a nickel for every time somebody said, "If I could have written a book on that twenty years ago I'd be rich and famous," I"d be a rich man. Pick up some great books to read, too. You must read a lot--believe me you will find the inspiration!
