A good working knowledge of the language in which you write; a great imagination; diligent research; patience; and a lot of luck.

Thanks for getting in touch, India. I walk almost every morning and each one is memorable because I am blessed to live in the best part of the planet.

Thank you, Mehmet. I'll be in touch soon.

Mehmet, why don't you let me have an e-mail address and I can respond to you there. A bit easier regarding links and attachments, as well as privacy issues.

Hi Mehmet, I would be delighted to help you in any way I can. I must admit to only getting to grips myself with Goodreads after being in the doldrums for a long time. Publishing my latest novel, just last month, especially as I have self-published this time, has spurred me on to look for better ways to market myself as a writer of thrillers. Here are a few ideas to start with. 1. Get as many people as you can to review your books and post them on Amazon and Goodreads as well as any website they may have such as a blog; 2. Check out Listopia on this website and see if there is a genre that suits and ask friends to vote for your books in the appropriate list; 3. invite as many friends as you can -- especially those who show an interest in the material you publish; 4. follow as many as possible; 5. "like" as much as possible, etc. If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to ask. 6. Your books appear to be technical so you might like to provide free review copies to magazines, trade publications, etc. where they might be of interest to readers.

Thank you for your interest, Diane. I think writers use their life's experiences in their novels, however good or bad they may be. Yes, I've drawn upon some of my own experiences in writing my books. Sometimes a little bit of me turns up in a character, both good and bad ones. If you look at my Profile here on Goodreads you'll see the type of books I generally write -- all thrillers of some kind or other. My latest, "Bounty" is a political thriller set in Lebanon, Israel, Iran and Australia. By the way, it is available free as a Kindle download at present -- expires midnight July 20 U.S. Pacific Time. As for the second part of your question, I take it you have in mind a work of fiction but based on your own life's experiences. I wouldn't see that as any different from writing any other kind of fiction. i.e. character bios, an overall summary of the story, then a detailed plot outline, all the usual things one does before embarking on the actual writing. And, of course, research. If you are talking about a memoir, an actual autobiography, I happen to writing my own at present and the way I have set about doing this is to write up a time line of all major events in my life and then to chronologically go through it and expand. I plan to publish that early next year. I wish you all the best with your writing.

I have always loved reading, especially thrillers and murder, mystery and suspense. I eventually decided to give it a go myself.

I am about two thirds the way through my next novel which I'm calling "Bounty." I have also commenced writing a movie script just to see if I can do it. It is vastly different from writing novels. I am also working on some concepts and a script for television series.

Don't ever, ever give up and make every word count.

Creative writing takes your mind away from day to day trials and tribulations. When I write I completely cut myself off from everything else and focus exclusively on my writing.

Fortunately I don't usually get writer's block but I tend to write various projects at the same time, doing a little on each every day. That way, I get another 24 hours to think up what might happen next. I guess that's the answer to writer's block for me.

My most recent book (apart from the one I'm currently working on) is "Sleeping With Angels" which is a legal thriller. I was a lawyer for many years practising in the UK and Australia and I have drawn on that experience as background for the novel.
