Kat Howard Buttercup and Westley from The Princess Bride. Because of true love, of course.
Kat Howard Roses and Rot is a retelling of the "Tam Lin" ballad. So part of the idea came from there, part came from wanting to think about the relationship between sacrifice and art, and part came from wanting to tell a story about sisters.
Kat Howard The practical answer is, these days I'm often writing to deadline, so I'm inspired by making sure things get turned in on time. The more fun answer is I often listen to music while I write, and so I have particular songs that I associate with stories and books, and I listen to those.
Kat Howard Lots of short stories, including one for my forthcoming collection, A Cathedral of Myth and Bone.
Kat Howard To me, "aspiring" means that you want to do something, but you haven't tried yet. So my advice would be to write. Even if you aren't sure about your idea, even if it's hard, even if you get stuck, write. Learn how to tell stories, learn how and when you like to work. Write.
Kat Howard I love that my job is telling stories.
Kat Howard For me, I find if I'm blocked, it's either because I'm still thinking through something, or I've made a wrong choice in the story. So I try to do other things - go for a run, clean the apartment, bake - and if that doesn't shake things loose, I'll look back at the story, and see if I need to do something different.

Chocolate. Chocolate also helps.
