A writer talking about writer's block is like a golfer talking about yips and shanks. You don't.

It's not about inspiration. I can't NOT write. I'm constantly jotting things down, thinking about what I'm doing, running back to the drawing board. I wouldn't know what else to do with my days if i didn't write.

Write every day. Remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on the next step, not the finish line.

There can be an intense satisfaction in a good day of work; one I don't necessarily associate with other endeavors. Having said that there's a quote i remember reading once that entailed a distinguished writer/teacher talking to a student about their work. "Well, you're a writer... God help you."

Dialogue and character moves a story forward in a play. As often as not, action moves a story forward in a film (You "hear" a play - you "see" a film). I'm finding fiction to be a combination of the both. I love character. I love creating voices. That's the playwright in me. I'm also now enjoying creating "visuals" on the page - description that wouldn't necessarily be in a stage play or a screenplay. In some ways a novelist is a playwright, director and set designer (with a sprinkling of poet) all rolled into one.

My second novel, The Practical Navigator, will be released by St. Martin's Press August, 2016. I'm currently working on a novel for children.
