Kate Kerrigan I got the idea for The Dress after talking to an old work associate from my distant days working on fashion magazines. I had never been inspired to write about the fashion business before but then this random conversation with this random man suddenly made me remember that, despite the idea I have about myself as being disinterested in fashion, actually I love clothes and I have an enormous respect for the art of couture. It was like they had been this idea lying dormant inside me and once it came out there was no stopping me. My next book will also be about the powerful role the clothes play in shaping and recording the emotional lives of women.
Kate Kerrigan Almost everything inspires me to write, one way or another. Often, I will hear a story, or a snatch of conversation and it just gets stored away in my ideas bank. I carry a notebook with me at all times but although I write them down when ideas hit, I really refer to my notes – just the act of writing them down makes them stick in my brain. And I figure, if it's a good idea then I will remember it. The the two things that inspire me are usually nature and emotion. If I see something beautiful I want to describe it in if I feel something strongly want to write about it
Kate Kerrigan I have never had writer's block, thank goodness. By the time I have finished one book, I already have another one in my head. I carry a notebook around with me all the time and jot down ideas - but there is generally one large theme comes to me. As a writer I communicate. If I have nothing left to say - I guess I'll give it up.
Kate Kerrigan Working from home. It's also the worst thing.
Kate Kerrigan Keep going. Do it because you love it - not for success. And use editors. Find people you trust to show your work to and learn to take constructive criticism. Editing the hardest thing about writing but it's also the most important.
Kate Kerrigan I have just finished copyedits on The Dress - my new novel due out this summer (2015). Here's the cover blurb. VERY EXCITED!

Beauty beyond measure comes at a price.

Lily Fitzpatrick loves vintage - clothes, shoes, handbags, accessories - things made all the more precious because once they were owned and loved by another woman.  Thousands follow her vintage fashion blog and her daily #WhatLilyWears Instagram feed.

But this passion for the beautiful clothes of the past is about to have unforeseen consequences, when Lily stumbles upon the story of a 1950s New York beauty, who was not only everything Lily longs to be, but also shares Lily’s surname.

Joy Fitzpatrick was a legend.  But what was the famous dress which she once commissioned - said to be so original that nothing in couture would ever match it again?  What happened to it - and why did Joy Fitzpatrick suddenly disappear from New York high society?

The Dress interweaves the dramatic story of Joy, the beautiful but tortured socialite and that of Lily - determined to uncover the truth and, if possible, to bring back to life the legendary dress itself.
