Alexander McCall Smith I often get up very early in the morning to write. I find that I can be very productive at that time as it is so quiet and I can write without any disturbance. I travel a great deal and often find myself writing on planes and trains, and in hotel rooms!
Alexander McCall Smith Thank you - I am delighted to hear that you have been enjoying the books in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, and I greatly appreciated your kind remarks. Mma Ramotswe is not based on any particular person, but she shares the warmth and resourcefulness of many of the people I have met in Botswana.
Alexander McCall Smith I wouldn’t like to be on the wrong side of Mma Ramotswe. I think that if you were to find yourself in that position, then the best thing to do would be simply to throw your hands up and sit down with her for a cup of tea!
Alexander McCall Smith I generally try not to be autobiographical, but observations about things I am thinking about do sometimes appear in the books.

My advice to someone writing their first fiction book is to always persist - and don’t get too caught up in the first book. The second book you attempt will often be better. Never lose faith in what you want to write.
Alexander McCall Smith Thanks - I'm glad you enjoy the books. I do a lot of public appearances - unfortunately I can't get to all the libraries I should like to visit. Generally, requests for a visit are made to my publishers. All best, AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith Thank you or the generous comments. I think I like all my series pretty equally. Yes, there will be more books in them all. AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith I do plan to come back to Singapore at some stage, but do not know when. Yes, I should like to include an Asian character. Thank you for the suggestion. AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith Thanks for your kind words. There are no plans at present to continue the television series - unfortunately. AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith The fictional characters are usually not - but sometimes I put real people in as themselves. AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith I think that she has been influenced as much by literature as by philosophy. I think her main influence was Auden. AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith Dear Indu, The Yeti seems to have disappeared. I'd like to bring him back some day, as I rather liked him! I hope I'll write more Corduroy Mansions books. AMcS
Alexander McCall Smith Read a great deal. And then practise, practise, practise! AMcS
