Rabi Thapa Hi, Sorry for taking so long to reply. As far as I can tell, the social position of women in Thamel is not much better than it is elsewhere in Nepal, and in many cases much worse. While some may run businesses and earn an income in the many different kinds of establishments in the tourist quarter, many of the jobs available are precarious and exploitative, particularly those in massage parlours that are fronts for the sex industry. You're absolutely right - despite the laws in place, the reality is rather different for poor women who are compelled to earn a living in Thamel.
Rabi Thapa As a rather disorganized writer, I'm happy to advance on several fronts: a novel that has been with me rather too long, about a journalist who goes batty but believes himself to be better off for it; a dystopia set in a Kathmandu of ghouls and gods and talking dogs; and a non-fictional exploration of our (degraded) relationship with our environment. I have no idea which will see the light of day first.
