As a professional writer, critic, and cultural journalist, inspiration doesn't really play a role. It's a job. But I get to choose my subject depending on what I want to learn about. Of course, I have motivations like educating or entertaining readers, as well as trying to give a voice to women of the past who have been neglected by historians.

We decided to start with the most popular movement, Impressionism. I was very familiar with the artists' work, but what I learned through research was how much their group dynamics played a role in sustaining them until they were finally accepted.
