Recently, I thought about an ex-boyfriend that I really cared about but that I had to let go. He was probably the one boyfriend that I've had who truly knew how to date me and make me feel like I was special. I've been single for a while and so he's crept up in thought a few times now and so I took a piece of the time that we spent together, embellished on parts of it, and made it into a book.

There's really no cut and dry way to answer this. So far, things that I've gone through personally, or have seen have been the inspiration behind the stories that I've written. But there are times where I can see a caption or a news story and formulate a "what if...?" in my mind and run with it from there. It's happened more than a few times.

I have a new novel, "Family Ties", that will be released November 14th, that I'm very excited about. Usually even before my book goes to editing, I'm onto the next. So, I am also writing the next interracial romance novel that was already in progress when this story tapped me on the shoulder. It's a story about a boxer with a past. The story won't focus so much inside the ring, but primarily life outside the ring.

1. Always carry a tablet with you. Your thoughts mean something and you never know how they can contribute to the development of a masterpiece.
2. Align yourself wisely because the industry is in essence the "entertainment industry", and just like Hollywood, it's dog eat dog. Pick those who you can be yourself with and who genuinely want to see you do well.
3. WRITE. WRITE. WRITE
4. NETWORK. NETWORK. NETWORK
5. Write from the heart
6. Be unafraid to express yourself.
7. You have to write from the heart and write what moves you without worrying about others because you will never be for everybody so be for YOU.

There are so many benefits to being a writer that I wish everyone understood. The most important one is that you never have to live alone with your thoughts again. Anything that plagues you, that makes you happy, that just lives in your soul, you're able to journal it and tuck it away for safe keeping, or you're able to develop characters from it and build great stories. It's just like that best friend that you can tell anything to, only it's not a human, but an energy. Does that make sense? Or do I sound crazy? Lol!

When I encounter writer's block, I do one of two things:
1. I use that time to catch up on reading that I don't normally get a chance to dive into.
2. Usually, when I get writer's block, it's for a particular type of story. Thankfully, for me, I have many characters that live inside my head so I'm able to go from an interracial romance story, to a story that has an urban fiction feel without blinking an eye.
The latter usually helps when I just have too much restless energy to sit still for a moment. The former works really good when I'm the mood to relax and be taken away.
