K.B. Hoyle My favorite fictional couple is Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Is there really a more perfect pairing than that? The romantic tension between the two of them--not liking each other and misunderstanding each other, but being drawn inexorably toward each other the whole time--is just literary perfection. I won't spoil the end of the novel for those poor souls who haven't had the joy of reading it yet, but the moment in the story where you learn what's really going on makes for the absolute best resolution of romantic tension EVER. This is why I chose the name "Darcy" for my first protagonist in my own novels.
K.B. Hoyle There's no such thing as writer's block! Like Yoda said, "Do or do not. There is no try." If you're a serious writer, you write for a living (or for a supplement to your living). If you treat writing like a job, then you must keep plugging along no matter how blocked you're feeling. You wouldn't wake up one morning and not go to your job because you're "just not feeling it," and that's the perspective you need to take on writer's block, as well. Put words on the page, even if they're bad words. You can always go back and change them later. That's how you deal with writer's block.
K.B. Hoyle Well, at some point you have to stop being an "aspiring" writer and be an actual writer! Writers write - period. Don't wait around for lightning to strike; take action to make yourself sit down and do it. If you consider yourself "aspiring," evaluate why that is. Do you actual want to write, or do you just enjoy the idea of it? There are a lot of people out there who enjoy the idea of it who don't have a real writing bone in their bodies. I say if you are meant to be a writer, you have to sit down and write. And if you don't know where or how to begin, research the craft, get inspiration from your favorite authors, and ask trusted people to hold you accountable. On top of my writing career, I teach full time, am married and raising three (about to be four) small children, manage my household, and maintain a speaking and touring schedule. If I can find time to write, anybody can! MAKE your dream a reality, don't just sit around waiting for it to drop into your lap.
