I've been a therapist for nearly 30 years and what I've been seeing "from the field" is that women everywhere are depleted, emotionally exhausted and disconnected from their fundamental vitality. We know who we are in all of our roles, to and for everyone else, but not who we are to and for ourselves. We know what everyone else wants and needs but when asked what we want and need, we run into a blank space. Because, so long ago we had to disconnect from something authentic inside us and being likable. The seed for this most recent book was about giving women the courage to choose authenticity over likability. To show women the path home to themselves.

When something confuses or interests me, I take to writing to understand more. I work difficulties out through writing, for others as well as myself. Inspiration comes when something feels unresolved or where I feel I can be of service and offer something that will help someone else. I suppose wanting to help is my primary inspiration, when that means helping others or getting clearer inside myself about something.

Right now I am very focused on the issue of "the likability trap" for women and the emotional exhaustion that comes from always trying to be likable. I am giving lots of talks and workshops on daring to choose authenticity over likability. That's my NOW, not sure what's next. But one thing I know from doing this so long is that a next issue will appear. Being in the world, paying attention, noticing my own experience...it always generates a NEXT. For now, I am enjoying doing just this!

Write and then write some more. And, know that it's hard and supposed to be hard. Forgive yourself for not wanting to do it, if that happens. And finally, acknowledge how hard it is and your courage for staying the course.

I have to write. It's how I process, make sense and grow. It's a hard "have to," but the sense of satisfaction and nourishment i get from sticking with it and struggling through the process is immeasurable.

I get out in the world and talk to people. As soon as I get out of my head and interact and watch and experience, the words start appearing again.
